In memory of the innocent lives lost to terrorism

What can we, the people do: Svami Veda Bharati on how tackle Terrorism

Svami Veda Bharati:

The answer to terrorism is to refuse to be terrorized.
___________________________________________

The streets of Mumbai are now full.

Leopold Café, next to the Iconic Taj Hotel, had suffered shocking violence.  Within 24 hours of the ending of commando action the café opened as the owners and the Manager said, "we cannot give to the terrorists the satisfaction that they have succeeded".

A nine year old girl heard of the attacks and was terrified, suffering from shock and fever.

Her father brought her to Leopold Café to light a candle.

A small crowd gathered beaming and smiling.  She lit the candle and smiled.

The people from the crowd patted her on the back.

She went home free of shock and fear, with a smile on her face.

This is the answer to terrorism but it requires resilience of mind and spiritual strength.

This is the mood all over India at this time.

Terrorist attack on Mumbai

Learned friends,
Jay Jinendra

It is horrible, this dastardly terrorist attack by Pakistan-trained terrorists on Mumbai.

The terrorists are clearly familiar with the city of Mumbai and seem to know exactly what they are doing.

The tragedy of modern civilisation is that the terrorist can slip through the most diligent of check posts.

Constant vigilance, a clear cut policy on combating terrorism and a strong and decisive legal system could be possible deterrents to terrorist attacks. But our country lacks these.

Heartbreaking to see my city in flames.

My immediate family is safe for now, but how safe are we if our beloved city is under such a deadly terrorist attack?

I hope the Government takes firm steps and comes down very hard on terrorism. The terrorists have shown that they deserve no mercy. None
should be wasted on them.

And I pray that political parties do not use this attack on Indians as a way to garner more votes and create hatred between various communities in India.

What we Indians need to do in times like this is to come together, trust each other and act in the best interests of the nation.

-Shahid Kabir

It will take on whichever colour you add
As if life were a cup of glass!

NB 'kaanch kaa gilaas' is extremely difficult to translate for those who are not familiar with Hindi - Urdu. For literally, it would mean a cup made out of glass. For in India, a tall cup, used for drinking water, milk and lassi, is known as a glass. It is usually made out of steel, but it is still referred to as glass. This is why you would go to roadside stalls in India and find 'ganne kaa ras', sugarcane juice, sold by the glass!

(Rupert, maybe you could explain the Indian usage of the word 'glass' for your forthcoming seminar - Chutneyfying English)

ROZ EK SHER [For the Indian cricket team, who wallopped the Aussies 2 - 0 in the four test series]

Dear friends,
Jay Jinendra

Hearty congratulations to the Indian cricket team, for thumping the Aussies 2 - nil in the recently concluded test series.

The big 5 - Sachin, Rahul, Saurav, Laxman and Kumble fought well. Very good batting from Gautam Gambhir, Laxman, Sachin and Veeru, exceptional bowling from Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan, competent bowling from Amit Mishra and Harbhajan Singh and ice cool leadership from Mahendra Singh Dhoni ensured that India thrashed the Aussies soundly.

A deserving win, worthy of grand celebration. Well played, brothers.

As I lie down, eyes closed, lost in fantasies
What would happen if someone steps into them?

NB The translation struggles to capture the delicacy of the wording of
the original. "Chham" is an onomatopoeic word, denoting the melodious
sound of the paayal, worn by Indian women. The phrase "Chham se"
denotes suddenness and unexpectedness. Read the original couplet and
appreciate the romantic imagery of the poet. Picture yourself
stretched out, eyes closed, lost in your dreams. Then, your beloved
enters the dream. What would happen? Riyaz Khairabadi is a poet after
my heart!

Food for thought

To reflect and... Act

The difference between the poor countries and the rich ones is not the age of the country.

This can be shown by countries like India & Egypt, that are more than 2000 years old and are still poor.

On the other hand, Canada, Australia & New Zealand, that 150 years ago were inexpressive, today are developed countries and are rich.

The difference between poor & rich countries does not reside in the available natural resources.

Japan has a limited territory, 80% mountainous, inadequate for agriculture & cattle raising, but it is the second strongest world economy. The country is like an immense floating factory, importing raw material from the  whole world and exporting manufactured
products.

Another example is Switzerland, which does not plant cocoa but has the best chocolate of the world.

In its tiny territory, they raise animals and plant the soil during 4 months per year.

Not just that, they produce dairy products of the best quality.

It is a small country that transmits an image of security, order & labour, which made it the world's strongest safe.

Executives from rich countries who communicate with their counterparts in poor countries show that there is no significant intellectual
difference.

Race or skin color are also not important: immigrants labeled lazy in their countries of origin are the productive power in rich European
countries.

What is the difference then?

The difference is the attitude of the people, framed along the years by the education & the culture.

On analyzing the behavior of the people in rich & developed countries, we find that the great majority follow the following principles in
their lives:

1. Ethics, as a basic inviolable principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. Respect for the law
5. Respect for the rights of other citizens.
6. Love for work
7. Hard work, organised efforts, co ordinated management resources
8. Will of super action.
9. Punctuality.

In poor countries, only a minority follow these basic principles in their daily life.

We are not poor because we lack natural resources or because nature was cruel to us.

We are poor because we lack attitude.

We lack the will to comply with and teach these functional principles of rich & developed societies.

If we love our country, we should make sure that we follow the same principles in our daily lives that citizens of developed countries do.
Instead of cribbing and complaining incessantly and blaming everything on our national leaders and the caste system and reservation quotas, etc.

BANJAR
A Poem by Rahul Upadhyay (online link - http://mere--words.blogspot.com/2008/05/blog-post_02.html)

________
Glossary:

Tuberculosis of the lungs, characterized by the coughing up of
mucus and sputum, fever, weight loss, and chest pain.

LSD, a crystalline solid, C20H25N3O, the diethyl amide of
lysergic acid, a powerful psychedelic drug that produces temporary
hallucinations and a schizophrenic psychotic state

LCD, liquid-crystal display: a method of displaying
readings continuously, as on digital watches, portable computers, and
calculators, using a liquid-crystal film, sealed between glass plates,
that changes its optical properties when a voltage is applied.

MAHAVIR JAYANTI

Dear friends,
Jay Jinendra

Please accept our greetings on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, the auspicious day when Tirthankara Mahavir, the twenty-fourth and last
Tirthankara of the Jain religion took birth in India, 2607 years ago.

It is a fallacy to think that Mahavi was the founder of Jainism. He was the twenty-fourth in the line of Jinas, and he taught exactly the
same things as the first Jina, Tirthankara Rishabh Dev.

Jainism is an independent religion, and has existed since time immemorial. It is incorrect to consider Jainism as a sect of Hinduism
or Buddhism or as a religion that rose as a reaction to Brahminism. Jainism is an ancient religion, as old as time itself. Jainism was
known earlier as the Shramana Dharma and Jains were known as Nirgranthas.

The quiet mountain background,
the trail rising like exuberance amidst the pines,
the river spread at my feet, like a line of pain,
Fledglings quiet in their nests.

I gazed to my heart's content,
consoling myself that I would be back, although it would be days-
months-ages later.

The horizon seemed to raise its eyelid
And lightning asked agitatedly,
"Oh wanderer, will you remember?"
-Agyeya

Many generations shall dwell in this building
So do not weaken the foundation with sand*, o builders!

English translation by Manish Modi

Cement and sand need to be mixed in a certain proportion in order to construct buildings. Since sand is cheaper than cement, most building contractors add more sand than necessary in order to maxImise their profits, at the expense of weakening the foundations of the buildings they build. Many such poorly constructed buildings collapse each year, killing hundreds of dwellers. Hence, the poet addresses builders and tries to get them to think of the innocent people who would live in the buildings they construct and whose lives would be at stake if they were to construct an inferior building.

On Valentine's

St Val's Day. Take the marketing brouhaha and the political grandstanding away and it would be such a cute festival! A day when it
is OK to speak with your heart and see the world with rose-tinted glasses. A time to let your heart beat faster and your breath falter
every time you see your beloved. A day when we ought to shed all inhibitions and shout our love from rooftops, be it with the stylish
panache of Frank Sinatra or the earthy gusto of Dharmendra.

So come, let us abandon ourselves to the spirit of love and tell all those whom we love how much they mean to us! Here is a cute sher to go with the mood.
