______________
Mir Taqi Mir can justly lay claim to the title of the greatest poet of Urdu.  He has been called the "Khudaye-Sukhan" of Urdu poetry. Some would claim that Ghalib was the greatest Urdu poet. But not only did Mir precede Ghalib, his poetry is endowed with a simplicity that one
despairs of finding in Ghalib's works. For me, the simple honest verse of Mir is infinitely preferable to that of the self-confessed, difficulty-loving Ghalib!

Mir Taqi Mir was born in Agra and moved to Delhi after a failed affair of the heart. He was born in abject poverty and moved to Delhi to escape from it. But being a straightforward person, Mir was incapable of the obsequious manner that was expected at the royal court. Hence,
he had to return from Delhi a pauper and spent his last years in Lucknow, serving under Navab Asaf Al Doulah for a monthly salary of Rs. 300.

Mir's poetry is known for its literary merit, sweetness of language, elegance of presentation amd sensitive depiction of passion and tenderness. No wonder Allama Niaz Fatehpuri called Mir the Shahenshah of Urdu poetry.

ROZ EK SHER

मैं दिल खोल ताबाँ! कहाँ जाके रोऊँ?
कि दोनों जहाँ में फ़राग़त नहीं है
-मीर अब्दुलहई 'ताबाँ'

main dil khol Taabaan, kahaan jaake rouun
ki donon jahaan mein faraaghat nahiin hai
-Mir Abdulhai 'Taabaan'

O Taabaan, where can I go and weep to my heart's content
For there is no cure [for an aching heart] in both* the worlds

English adaptation by Manish Modi

*In Islamic teachings, there are two worlds - here and the afterworld.
Hence, Urdu poetry talks of "Do Jahaan", meaning This World and the
Next.
___________________
Mir Abdulhai 'Taabaan' was an illustrious Urdu poet who lived in
Delhi, a junior contemporary of Mir Taqi 'Mir', Mirza Rafi 'Sauda' and
Shams Al Din Janjana 'Mazhar'.

It is said that Taabaan was homosexual. All his life, he longed for
Suleiman, an unknown youth, who was unfaithful to him.

It is believed that Taabaan himself was incredibly good looking and
his company was sought after by all his contemporaries and peers.

DHATU-RATNAKARA
(Ocean of Verb-Forms)
By Muni Lavanyavijaya
Sanskrit
Set of 5 Books
Edited by Dr. Omnath Bimali
2004    240 x 185 mm    3000 pp (in 5 books)
Hardback    Rs. 3500 per set

The grammatical description of verbs plays a pivotal role in the
study of Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, the description of verb forms is a
prominent feature of any grammatical work. Dhatupatha is the basic &
primary component of the description of verb forms. Many Sanskrit
grammarians have collated all the verbs in Sanskrit and illustrated
their verb forms using different methodologies.

'Dhaturatnakara' follows the methodolgy adopted by
Hemacandracarya's Haima Vyakarana. This work has been rendered by the
disciple of Acarya Vijayanemisuri, Muni Lavanyavijaya, who went on to
become Acarya Vijayalavanya Suri. His editing is so thorough, that it
is unlikely that any Dhaturupa or verb form of Sanskrit has been
overlooked in this veritable ocean of verb-forms.

'Dhaturatnakara' not only complements Haima Vyakarana; it is a
model grammatical work on Sanskrit Dhatus, and a must-have for every
student and scholar of Sanskrit grammar.

The title of each volume is given below:

   Volume 1 : Tinantaprakriya
   Volume 2 : Nigantaprakriya
Volume 3 : Sannantaprakriya tatha Yanantprakriya
Volume 4 : Yanluvantaprakriya tatha Namadhatuprakriya
   Volume 5 : Bhavakarmaprakriya

The five volumes are attractively published using a fresh typeface;
reasonably priced; more importantly, the proof reading is impeccable!

DHATURATNAKARA
By Muni Lavanyavijaya
Sanskrit
Set of 5 books
Edited by Dr. Omnath Bimali
2004    240 x 185 mm    3000 pp (in 5 volumes)
Hardcover    Rs. 3500 per set

Grammatical description of verbs plays a pivotal role in the study of Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, the description of verb forms is a prominent feature of any grammatical work. Dhatupatha is the basic & primary component of the description of verb forms. Many Sanskrit grammarians
have collated all the verbs in Sanskrit and illustrated their verb forms using different methodologies.

'Dhaturatnakara' follows the methodolgy adopted by Hemacandracarya's Haima Vyakarana. This work has been rendered by the disciple of Acarya Vijayanemisuri, Muni Lavanyavijaya, who went on to become Acarya Vijayalavanya Suri. His editing is so thorough, that it
is unlikely that any Dhaturupa or verb form of Sanskrit has been overlooked in this veritable ocean of verb-forms.

'Dhaturatnakara' not only complements Haima Vyakarana; it is a model grammatical work on Sanskrit Dhatus, and a must- have for every student and scholar of Sanskrit grammar.

The title of each volume is given below:
Volume 1 : Tinantaprakriya
Volume 2 : Nigantaprakriya
Volume 3 : Sannantaprakriya tatha Yanantprakriya
Volume 4 : Yanluvantaprakriya tatha Namadhatuprakriya
Volume 5 : Bhavakarmaprakriya

The five volumes are attractively published using a fresh typeface; reasonably priced; more importantly, the proof reading is impeccable!

ROZ EK SHER

Dear friends,
Jay Jinendra

Quite the most romantic proposal I have come across in literature is the one by Dandin in his marvellous novel, Dasakumaracarita.  I love this proposal because of its audacity and directness. The situation is such:

The nayaka {hero} Apaharavarman is a swashbuckling adventurer, [an ancient Indian avatara of Indiana Jones]. Stealing into the palace of the beautiful princess Ambalika in order to loot her jewellery, he finds his heart stolen when he comes upon the gorgeous princess lying
supine in deep slumber. He then jots down the following words on a piece of paper that he places beside her and melts away into the night.

त्वाम् अयम् आबद्धाञ्जलि दासजनस तम् इमम् अर्थम् अर्थयते:
स्वपिहि मया सह सुरत व्यतिकरखिन्नै माम् ऐवम्
-द्ण्डी कृत दशकुमारचरित, श्लोक ७.२४३

tvaam ayam aabaddhaanjali daasajanasa tam imam artham arthayate
svapihi mayaa saha surata vyatikarakhinnai maam aivam
-Dandin's "Dasakumaracarita". Shloka 7.243

Here I am - your slave,
hands folded in subservience.
I beg of you this one thing:
that you should sleep with me beside you,
and only exhausted after erotic union, and not,
not tired in the way you are now.

VANDE MATARAM: On our 60th anniversary of Independence

हुस्ने-वतन से बेहतर कोई हुस्न नहीं
मुहिब्बे-वतन से बड़ी कोई इबादत नहीं
इस बगिया की हिफ़ाज़त करना दोस्तो
बिना इसके तुम नहीं और हम नहीं

There is no beauty greater than this great nation
There is no worship greater than patriotism
Look after this garden friends
For we are nothing without it

ROZ EK SHER

चूम लेती हैं कभी लब, तो कभी रुख़्सार को
तुमने ज़ुल्फ़ों को बहुत सर पे चढ़ा रखा है
-अनजान

Chuum letii hain kabhii lab, to kabhii rukhsaar ko
Tumne zulfon ko bahut sar pe chadhaa rakhaa hai
-Unknown

They kiss your lips, or sometimes your face
You let your hair take a lot of liberties

Sher contributed and translated by Sushant Agarwal

NB The translation is good but cannot capture the pun on the Hindi
phrase "sar pe chadhaa rakhaa hai" which figuratively means: to allow
someone to take liberties. Literally, it means: to place someone on
your head. In this sher, it is the nayika's hair that is being
referred to. It is on her head literally and is allowed to take a lot
of liberties, since the hair kisses her lips and cheeks. [Obviously,
the poet envies the hair]
